More than 70 church members and friends assembled on Friday night to enjoy another of chef Saju Mathew’s famed curry nights. These annual fundraisers for the Palani Mission in Tamil Nadu are eagerly anticipated, and tickets sell out very quickly.
We were blessed by having Deepa and Johns join us on the evening. Deepa is the daughter of Revd John and Sheebajohn, the leaders of Palani Mission.
This year Saju created a new menu based on his grandmother’s recipes from Kerala, and diners’ feedback was that it was one of his best meals ever. A new feature this year – a raffle – raised a further £450 towards the record-breaking total. The money raised will pay the training fees of a community nurse for the next two years, giving her a qualification which will secure her fulltime employment serving the local community. It will also enable the construction of some houses, plus medical camps for those who cannot afford medical care.
